What's the Deal With "D"?

Vitamin D. Big deal, right? Well, actually, it is a big deal. Most people are aware that vitamin D is important for your bones. But did you know it is important in preventing cancer, boosting mood, preventing cardiovascular disease, preventing diabetes and helping with weight loss? That's practically a menopause wish list. Researchers are also exploring its role in treating or preventing multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and muscle aches. Not too shabby for a vitiamin that we can make ourselves with a few minutes of sunshine every day.

And if you haven't been giving much thought to getting your vitamin D, you might be surprised to know that there is a fair chance that you are already vitamin D deficient. If you live in a northern latitude, work inside, have dark skin, or use sun block religiously, you may be lacking enough vitamin D to get the benefits of this little wonder.

There are several ways to get enough vitamin D, including sunlight, diet, and supplements. The solution to getting enough vitamin D is as simple as a little outdoor exercise or gardening, a helping of salmon or glass of fortified milk, or a daily supplement with your breakfast. Seems like a pretty small price to pay for all that prevention. Don't even think about this one -- grab a friend. Go for a walk. Get your D.
