Definition: An old part of the cerebral cortex that forms part of the floor of the lateral ventricle of the brain; thought to be responsible for creating, storing, and retrieving memory.

Examples: In Alzheimer Disease large portions of the hippocampus are destroyed, with a devastating affect on memory.
