Definition: The psychic and emotional energy associated with instinctual biological drives. It is most often used to refer to sexual desire in both men and women. During menopause, falling levels of hormones, including estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, can cause a diminishing of libido. If this creates a problem, it may be diagnosed as inhibited sexual desire (ISD) and can be treated with hormone supplementation, lifestyle changes and/or psychotherapy for the woman or couple.
