Definition: Premature ovarian failure occurs when the ovaries stop functioning prior to the age of 40. Women may continue to have occasional periods, but are usually unable to conceive. Reasons for this spontaneous ceasing of ovarian function are unclear.
Usually women whose ovaries shut down prior to the age of 40 will show some symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, mood swings and trouble sleeping. Often hormone therapy is recommended to lower the risk of osteoporosis, thyroid disease and cardiovascular disease.
