Definition: A naturally occurring androgen (male steroid hormone) produced in the testes in men and (in small amounts) by the ovaries and adrenal cortex in women. Testosterone plays a role in the development of male sexual characteristics, including muscle formation and hair patterns. It also plays a role in sexual desire. When it is deficient, it may be prescribed as a treatment for some sexual arousal disorders.
