Definition: A bladder, kidney, ureter or urethral infection due to bacteria that typically have entered through the urethra during the process of intercourse, improper wiping techniques, poor hygiene, or other reasons. A woman may be prone to UTIs after menopause because the urethral tissue is not flexible and may not be as good a barrier to infection as it was when the woman was younger.
Also Known As: cystitis; bladder infection; urethritis; pyelonephritis
Examples:
A urinary tract infection may be accompanied with pain on urination or with feeling like you have to urinate when there is very little urine in the bladder.
